A signature of a truly delicious and healthy pizza isn't just its crust (see here for some healthy pizza dough recipes!), but the sauce that ties together the flavor of all the healthy toppings.
Cooks and pizza aficionados tend to guard their pizza sauce recipes carefully, but I'm here to share with you some of my most favorite pizza sauce recipes, each of which has pleased the palettes of my friends and family for years.

Basic Pizza Sauce Recipe
Active Time: 5 Minutes | Yield: 1 Pizza
- 1 small (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
- 1 small (8 oz.) can tomato paste
- 3 cloves garlic—minced
- 1 tsp ground pepper
- 3/4 tsp dried Italian seasoning
- 1/2 tsp dried (1/2 TBS fresh) oregano
- 1/4 tsp salt (or salt substitute)
Directions
Mix and spread over crust.
OPTIONAL: Heat small saucepan over low heat. Add all ingredients and mix together well. Allow ingredients to simmer for at least 15 minutes.
Classic Pizza Sauce Recipe
Active Time: 10 minutes | Yield: 1 Pizza
- 3 Roma Tomatoes—diced (or 1 10 oz. can of diced tomatoes)
- 1 small yellow onion—chopped
- 1 TBS extra virgin olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic—minced
- 1/4 cup red wine (vegetable broth or water are suitable substitutes)
- 1 tsp ground pepper
- 1/4 tsp salt (or salt substitute)
- 1 tsp dried (1 TBS fresh) oregano
- 1 tsp dried (1 TBS fresh) basil
- 1/2 tsp dried (1/2 TBS fresh) parsley
- 1/2 tsp dried (1/2 TBS fresh) rosemary
Directions
Heat a saucepan over medium heat. Once pan has warmed, pour the olive oil into the pan and allow it a few seconds to heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until transparent and lightly browned—5 to 8 minutes.
Add minced garlic, diced tomatoes, and red wine (or substitute). Use the liquid and your spatula to scrape up any browned bits of onion on the pan. Add all of the spices. Reduce heat to low and allow to simmer, covered, for 20 minutes.
If you like a thicker sauce, allow sauce to simmer uncovered for several additional minutes until it reaches your desired consistency.
Basic White Pizza Sauce
Active Time: 10 Minutes | Yield: 1 Pizza
- 1 TBS unsalted butter
- 1 1/2 TBS whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup cold milk
- 1/4 tsp salt (or salt substitute)
- 1/2 tsp ground pepper
- 1 garlic clove—minced
- 1 tsp dried (1 TBS fresh) basil
- 1/2 tsp dried (1/2 TBS fresh) oregano
- 1/4 cup (1 to 2 oz) Parmesan cheese—grated
Directions
Heat butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Once butter has melted and warmed, add flour and mix until thoroughly combined.
Adding a little at a time and whisking vigorously, add the milk to the flour-butter mixture. Add garlic, herbs, and cheese, mixing thoroughly. Let cook for 1 to 3 minutes, or until sauce has thickened sufficiently.
Roast Garlic & Coconut Milk White Sauce
Active Time: 10 Minutes | Yield: 1 Pizza
- 2 heads of garlic
- 1 (10 oz.) can of light coconut milk
- 1/2 tsp dried (1/2 TBS fresh) thyme
- 1/2 tsp dried (1/2 TBS fresh) oregano
- 1/2 tsp dried (1/2 TBS fresh) basil
- 1/4 tsp salt (or salt substitute)
- 1/4 tsp ground pepper
- pinch of nutmeg
Directions
Preheat oven to 400° F. Wrap whole heads of garlic in foil, place on a baking sheet, and bake for about 45 minutes. Unwrap and allow to cool for about 10 minutes before cutting off the bottom of the head and squeezing out the roasted garlic.
Mix roasted garlic with the rest of the ingredients until thoroughly combined.
OPTIONAL: Gently heat sauce over low heat and allow to simmer for 10 minutes.
Basic Olive Oil Pizza Sauce
Active Time: 5 Minutes | Yield: 1 Pizza
- 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tsp (1 TBS fresh) rosemary
- 1/4 tsp (3/4 tsp fresh) thyme
- 2 garlic cloves—minced
- 1/4 tsp salt (or salt substitute)
- 1/2 tsp ground pepper
Directions
Whisk ingredients together and brush over pizza crust.
OPTIONAL: Heat a saucepan over low heat. Add all ingredients and allow to warm gently for 5 minutes before removing from heat.
Leftovers may be used to marinate chicken or as a salad dressing.
Herbed Olive Oil Pizza Sauce
Active Time: 5 Minutes | Yield: 1 Pizza
- 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic—minced
- 1/4 tsp dried (3/4 tsp fresh) basil
- 1/4 tsp dried (3/4 tsp fresh) oregano
- 1/4 tsp dried (3/4 tsp fresh) parsley
- 1/4 tsp dried (3/4 tsp fresh) rosemary
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1/2 tsp ground pepper
- 1/4 tsp salt (or salt substitute)
Directions
Whisk together all ingredients and brush over pizza crust.
OPTIONAL: Heat saucepan over low heat. Add all ingredients and warm gently for about 5 minutes.
Leftovers may be used to marinate chicken or as a salad dressing.

@ytseoh: I wish I could put the olive oil sauces on just about everything. They work great for marinades and for brushing on chicken as it is grilled, too. I keep a little basil plant in my kitchen so I can always have something a little fresh with my pizzas. I'm right there with you!
@jenniferg78: Do give it a try. It's so easy, but it's amazing how much better it tastes than the canned stuff. It's much healthier, too--low sodium, low sugar, and nothing but flavor. :)
I made pizza dough, the classic sauce (amazingly delicious) and cut up lots of veggies, added some cheese= delicious dinner that was relatively health. The sauce was really good- and pretty easy. I love the smell as it simmers away :) Thanks for the great recipe.
